Roast dinner and sponge pudding voted school children’s favourite meal

November 2009

Roast dinner is top of the pops with school children

Research has revealed that Roast dinner followed by sponge pudding with custard is the nation’s favourite school meal.

The Local Authority Caterers Association (LACA) conducted an online poll of 3,000 people to mark today’s launch of the 2009 National School Meals Week (NSMW).

Ninety school meals caterers who between them, cater for 16,000 primary and secondary schools will take part in this year’s NSMW.

The Week’s activities, aimed at school caterers and primary school head teachers, teachers, governors, parents and pupils, operate through its own website www.iloveschoolmeals.co.uk.

Different themes and events for primary and secondary schools will be featured daily. On Tuesday, pupils can learn basic cooking skills online by watching demonstrations by Debbie Mumford, LACA’s School Chef of the Year 2009, and on Friday, they can acknowledge the great work of their school caterers by making thank you cards.

On Wednesday, secondary students can go online and watch former athlete Colin Jackson demonstrate a wide range of exercises to do both at home and at school.

Judy Hargadon, chief executive of the School Food Trust, which is supporting NSMW, stated: “With new nutritional standards now in force in all schools, National School Meals Week is a chance to highlight the hard work being put in to ensure that all children have access to healthy, well-balanced food at school.”

Michelle Williams from Artemis Solutions Group who specialise in recruiting for the Food and Beverages Sector comments “The nation’s future lies in the good health of our school children and NSMW is doing a good job of making it happen by its initiatives.”
