Tesco Milk Leads Sector with Carbon Footprint Display
November 2009
Tesco’s full fat, semi-skimmed and skimmed milk ranges will display the carbon footprint label in order to include carbon labels on their products, starting from this week.
Tesco has decided to increase awareness of climatic change and the carbon impact of products by having footprinted 500 products towards the year end
This decision came as a consequence of a survey which shows an 18 percent increase in the customer awareness regarding carbon foot printing as compared to last year.
An important revelation which came forth following the survey was that more than half of the customers nowadays seek to purchase eco-friendly or lower carbon footprint products. They are keen to make well-informed choices and want the companies to assist them in doing so by getting the products footprinted.
David North, Tesco Community and Government Director, stated; “The pint of milk is an iconic part of British family life. So we’re using it to play an important new role in helping our customers understand climate change, the carbon footprints of products, and what steps they can take to help. Milk is not only one of the biggest sellers in store; it’s also prominent on breakfast table’s day in day out across the country. So we think carbon labels on milk can play a great part in raising awareness and helping customers navigate the new carbon currency.”
Michelle Williams from Artemis Solutions Group who specialise in recruiting for Food and Beverage sector comments “The increasing level of consciousness among people in using environment friendly products will force more companies like Tesco to include carbon footprint. This is likely to be the start of a new labelling trend. ”
